Lucky for us, we have many choices when it comes to buying a DMR radio, especially in the portable and handy talkie market. As far as higher power mobile radios go, the vendor list is quite a bit shorter. So let’s start with portables.
DMR Portables
There are many choices in radios when it comes to the handy talkie market. Due to the way digital works, you can use much lower power to achieve perfect audio. Basically, if you are into a repeater enough for it to decode your data stream, there is no difference in the way you sound on a portable compared to a mobile radio. No longer is there a “quieting” signal report. You are either into the machine or you’re not. That’s why your options for buying a portable radio are much broader.
Adding to that, there are many more affordable UHF options than dual-band options. This is largely due to the fact that most DMR repeaters on-the-air are in fact UHF repeaters. VHF is growing, but is only a small slice of the demographic pie at this point.
DMR Mobiles
As mentioned earlier, there are far fewer options when it comes to DMR mobile manufacturers. This is especially the case when looking for a dual-band mobile DMR radio.
Many of the DMR mobile radios that you can find are geared specifically toward the commercial radio world and are used aftermarket radios. And there are far more UHF options than VHF options.
